The yellow-headed temple turtle is a large freshwater turtle native to mainland Southeast Asia, including the lower Mekong region. Its common name reflects its yellow head markings and its association with Buddhist temple ponds. It inhabits lowland wetlands, where it feeds mainly on plant material. Collection for food and trade, together with wetland loss and degradation, has severely depleted wild populations. It is a rare wildlife encounter rather than a species visitors should expect to see on a Mekong cruise.

Mekong
Dolphins inhabit northern Cambodian pools towards Laos, outside typical Vietnam-delta sailings. Otters and lesser adjutants are recorded at Prek Toal on Tonlé Sap, requiring a separate lake/wetland excursion. Neither northern pools nor the reserve is automatically included on a Mekong cruise.
