The Common Moorhen is a medium-sized waterbird belonging to the rail family. It occurs widely across Europe, Africa and Asia, usually near freshwater with abundant vegetation. The species can be encountered in suitable habitats within the Douro, Nile, Rhine, Saône and Seine river systems. Despite its familiar presence on urban ponds, it also inhabits quiet marshes, backwaters and densely vegetated river margins. Its dark plumage, red forehead shield and conspicuous white undertail markings make adults distinctive.
