The Maldivian atolls are not a solid wall of coral, but a broken chain of islands and submerged reefs. This fractured geography forms a complex system of deep-water channels, known locally as kandus. With each tide, these passages funnel ocean water, concentrating nutrients and attracting a high density of marine life. This predictable flow draws large pelagics like sharks and schooling fish, while submerged pinnacles, or thilas, serve as cleaning stations for manta rays.
