The flathead catfish is a large freshwater predator native to the Mississippi River basin and other central North American drainages. It is an important member of the Mississippi's bottom-dwelling fish community. Its broad, flattened head and mottled coloring distinguish it from other large catfish in the river. Although valued by anglers within its native range, introduced populations can threaten native fishes elsewhere.

These species are documented along the Upper Mississippi corridor. An upper-river record does not promise presence on a Lower Mississippi sailing.
