Tauchsafari vs. Tauchresort – Was buchst du?

The short answer

Book a liveaboard when the diving is the holiday and the best sites are offshore. Book a dive resort when you want land time, a flexible daily rhythm, a non-diving partner or family in the group, or you are still building experience close to shore.

Side-by-side comparison

Dives per week

Liveaboard: 18–26

Dive resort: 10–14

Site access

Liveaboard: Offshore pinnacles, remote atolls, wrecks

Dive resort: Sites within 60–90 min of the harbour

Typical day rate

Liveaboard: €176–€396 all-inclusive

Dive resort: €106–€264 room + €70–€132 diving

Included

Liveaboard: Cabin, all meals, guiding, transfers

Dive resort: Room; diving, meals and transfers usually extra

Flexibility

Liveaboard: Fixed schedule, one route

Dive resort: Skip a day, change plans, dive when you like

Non-divers

Liveaboard: Limited — snorkel-friendly routes only

Dive resort: Ideal: beach, spa, excursions on land

Packing

Liveaboard: Unpack once

Dive resort: Unpack once, but daily boat commutes

Seasickness

Liveaboard: Possible, including at night

Dive resort: Only during day trips

Cost: what the numbers really mean

A liveaboard looks more expensive per day and is usually cheaper per dive. Once you add a resort's room, meals, drinks, transfers and two-tank day trips, a mid-range resort week lands close to a mid-range boat week — but with roughly half the dives.

  • Liveaboard: €176–€396 per day, 3–4 dives, meals, cabin and transfers included
  • Resort: €106–€264 room + €70–€132 for two dives + meals and taxis
  • Cost per dive: roughly €44–€97 on a boat, €44–€79 at a resort — but not at the same sites
  • Extras on both: Nitrox, gear rental, marine-park fees, crew or staff tips

Where a boat is the only real option

Some destinations have no meaningful land-based alternative — the reefs are simply too far offshore for a day boat to reach and return safely.

  • Egypt's Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone and the Deep South
  • Galápagos Darwin and Wolf
  • Socorro / Revillagigedo
  • Tubbataha Reef
  • Raja Ampat's remote south and the Banda Sea
  • Truk Lagoon's deeper wrecks and the Great Barrier Reef's Coral Sea

Where a resort usually wins

  • Muck-diving and macro destinations where the best sites are a five-minute boat ride away
  • Trips with a non-diving partner, children or mixed interests
  • Courses: Open Water, Advanced and specialities are easier on land
  • First tropical dive trip after certification
  • Anyone prone to seasickness or who sleeps badly on a moving vessel
  • Short stays under four nights

Comfort, sleep and daily rhythm

On a boat, the dive briefing wakes you, the tank is already filled, and there is no taxi, no packing, no harbour wait. The flip side is a small cabin, engine noise on crossings and a schedule you do not control. A resort gives you a full room, a proper bed, restaurants and the option to sit a day out — at the cost of two boat commutes a day and less bottom time.

How to decide in two minutes

  • Do you want the animals that live offshore? → liveaboard
  • Is anyone in your group not diving? → resort, or a snorkel-friendly boat route
  • Under 25 logged dives? → resort first, boat next trip
  • Is maximum bottom time the point of the trip? → liveaboard
  • Do you get seasick? → resort, or a large, stable vessel on a sheltered route
  • Combining diving with sightseeing? → resort

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Is a liveaboard better than a dive resort?
For dives per week and access to offshore sites, yes. For flexibility, land time, non-diving companions and courses, a resort is the better trip. The right answer depends on the destination and who is travelling with you.
Is a liveaboard more expensive than a resort?
Per day it looks more expensive, per dive it usually is not. Liveaboard rates include cabin, all meals, guiding and transfers, while a resort week adds meals, taxis and day-trip diving on top of the room.
Can beginners book a liveaboard?
Open Water divers can join most Red Sea, Maldives and Caribbean boats. For Galápagos, Socorro or Tubbataha, plan on 50+ logged dives first — a resort trip is the natural way to build them.
What if my partner does not dive?
A resort is usually the easier choice. If you still want the boat, several routes take snorkelers at a reduced rate — we check with the operator whether your specific departure suits a non-diver.
What about seasickness on a liveaboard?
Most people adapt within a day, and larger steel vessels on sheltered routes move very little. If you know you are sensitive, tell us — we can steer you to calmer itineraries and lower, midship cabins.
