Guests disembark in Ambon Port. Raja Ampat refers to an archipelago with more than 1500 islands, including the four main islands of Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, and Misool. It is part of the Coral Triangle, making it one of the richest biodiversity areas in the world. Due to its strategic location in the western Pacific Ocean, currents flow through the archipelago from very deep water to shallow water. This creates stratospheric numbers of over 500 different species of corals in the area, ten times more than the Caribbean. Raja Ampat translates from the Indonesian language to Four Kings. Misool, the southernmost island, features an abundance of marine life, a variety of underwater seamounts, smaller pinnacles, coral walls, and coral gardens. These are covered in giant sea fans, soft corals in all colors, massive table corals, and countless fish. This is a prime location to find the elusive epaulette shark, or walking shark. It is a nocturnal shark that approaches its prey by walking closer and closer. The area is largely a marine park established by Misool Eco Resort in cooperation with local villages, prohibiting fishing within this zone. Park rangers patrol the area. The Dampier Strait, located between Waigeo and Batanta, offers beautiful coral gardens, underwater pinnacles or seamounts, sandy bottoms with coral heads, and cleaning stations. This area provides even more nutrients, attracting larger predators such as giant trevallies, yellowfin tuna, rainbow runners, and sharks like blacktip, grey reef, and whitetip sharks. It is also one of the few places in the world where two species of Manta rays are found on the same dive sites. Night dives are a highlight in Northern Raja Ampat. Opportunities are available to visit local villages or hike to one of the lookout points. The Banda Sea is spectacular and remote due to its location and the possibility of rougher seas. It features crystal clear waters, bottomless drop-offs, and colorful coral pinnacles. After the 1988 eruption of Gunung Api near Banda Neira, lava flowed into the sea, covering and overturning the coral below. Guests observe the fast recovery of the hard-coral garden that grew in its place. For night/dusk dives, guests can witness the mating dance of the very colorful mandarin fish, and search for frogfish, seahorses, razorfish, and octopus. Opportunities are available to visit the old historic town of Banda Neira. Here, guests find many remains of the Dutch and English spice trade. Guests visit an old nutmeg plantation and experience how this famous spice, once believed to cure the plague, is utilized. Fort Belgica offers great views of the port and Gunung Api. Koon Island is another very remote location situated between the Ceram, Arafura, and Banda Seas. Very nutritious currents feed the fish and corals, which thrive here like never before. Raja Ampat, translated from Indonesian, means Four Kings. It refers to an archipelago with more than 1500 islands, including the four main islands of Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, and Misool, and is part of the Coral Triangle, making it one of the richest biodiversity areas in the world. More than 1300 different species of fish and more than 600 different species of corals are some of the beauties from this Indonesian paradise. Ambon is the capital of the Maluku province. It is the most populated city in the area, and its phenomenal muck diving is considered among the best in the world. The city is split by an enormous Bay, which is recently connected by a bridge. Cuttlefish, seahorses, octopus, and many other critters find their home in this deep Bay. It is muck diving in its purest state. One of the most famous dive sites is Twilight in Laha village. As the name suggests, it feels like twilight even in broad daylight. Guests may initially wonder why their guide brought them here, but then a whole new world opens. Creatures that guests have never seen before or even knew existed are present. Here, guests find critters such as a harlequin shrimp or hairy frogfish, flamboyant cuttlefish, seahorses, mototi, hairy, starry, and wonderpus, which are just a few of the many different species of octopus found here. Biggest highlights include rhinopias or the elusive psychedelic frogfish, which, other than in Bali, is not found anywhere else in the world. Beautiful coral gardens are found outside the Bay. There is a huge natural rock bridge, called Pintu Kota. It is covered in beautiful and colorful soft corals, with great marine life.
