Mimic Octopus

The mimic octopus is one of nature's most extraordinary shape-shifters, capable of impersonating the appearance and behaviour of more than 15 different marine species including lionfish, flatfish, sea snakes, and jellyfish. Discovered in 1998 off Sulawesi, Indonesia, this remarkable cephalopod lives on featureless sandy and mucky substrates where camouflage is difficult — so it evolved mimicry instead. Watching one cycle through its repertoire of impressions is a mesmerizing dive experience.

Dykketips

Mimic octopuses are found on sandy slopes and muck-diving sites. They are most active during daylight hours. Approach very slowly to observe their mimicry behaviour — if stressed they will flee into a burrow. A good muck-diving guide is essential for locating them.
