Dusky Grouper

The dusky grouper is the iconic large predatory fish of the Mediterranean, a solitary and territorial species that inhabits rocky reefs, underwater caves, and boulder fields from 5 to 200 metres depth. Once severely overfished, populations have recovered remarkably in Turkish marine protected areas such as Kaş-Kekova and the Bodrum coast, where individuals can grow to impressive sizes and become surprisingly approachable by divers.

Dusky groupers in marine reserves are often very curious and may approach divers closely. Move slowly and avoid sudden gestures. They frequently inhabit the same cave or overhang for years, so local dive guides know exactly where to find them. Early morning dives often yield the best encounters as groupers emerge to hunt.
