About Nusantara
Nusantara navigates Komodo's dynamic currents, offering an authentic platform for exploring the archipelago's marine biodiversity.
The rugged, sun-scorched islands of the Komodo National Park rise from the sea like ancient reptiles, their arid slopes offering a stark contrast to the intensely vibrant world beneath the waves. This is a region defined by powerful oceanic forces, where the Indian and Pacific Oceans collide. These exchanges create nutrient-rich upwellings and strong currents that sustain a remarkable food web, from tiny pygmy seahorses clinging to gorgonian fans to majestic manta rays feeding in cleaning stations. The waters here are a mix of challenging drifts and protected coral gardens. Built as a traditional Indonesian vessel, the 21-meter Nusantara is specifically designed to navigate these channels, providing a functional and authentic platform to access the park's celebrated dive sites.
Diving operations are methodical and efficient. The day’s activities are centered around a shaded dive deck, which provides ample space for individual gear setup and storage. Divers are transported to sites like Manta Point and Batu Bolong via a single motorized tender, ensuring quick and direct access to the drop-off points. Before each immersion, experienced local guides provide detailed briefings, outlining the dive plan and offering specific guidance on managing the area’s famous currents. After the dive, dedicated rinse tanks for equipment and a separate station for underwater cameras are available, allowing photographers to care for their sensitive gear.
The atmosphere aboard Nusantara is social and group-oriented, reflecting the vessel’s layout. Accommodations for up to 12 guests are provided in three shared, dormitory-style cabins, a practical arrangement for solo travelers and groups. Two shared bathrooms serve all guests. Between dives, social life moves to the common areas. Inside, a simple lounge offers a space for meals and conversation. The most popular spot is often the upper sun deck, furnished with bean bags, where divers can relax, review their photos, and watch the dramatic Komodo landscapes pass by.
To sustain divers through multiple daily immersions, the onboard chef prepares hearty and flavorful meals. The cuisine is typically a satisfying blend of local Indonesian dishes and familiar international options, served family-style in the main dining area. This communal dining reinforces the friendly group dynamic on board. Fresh ingredients are sourced to create a varied menu throughout the trip. Standard beverages such as water, coffee, and tea are available at all times. The crew can accommodate most special dietary needs, but requires advance notification to ensure proper preparation.
Nusantara is a 21-meter traditional wooden vessel, constructed in 2017 and receiving a technical and interior update in 2021. With a narrow beam of 3 meters, its design is characteristic of local craft built for inter-island navigation. Power is supplied by a reliable Mitsubishi 6D16 cylinder engine, which propels the boat at a steady cruising speed of 7 knots, an efficient pace for moving between dive sites within the park’s protected waters. The vessel’s design is well-suited for the typical routes inside the archipelago, which generally do not involve long, open-ocean crossings. It carries sufficient freshwater for the duration of its standard itineraries.
This vessel operates itineraries exclusively within the Komodo National Park, with most trips beginning and ending in the port town of Labuan Bajo on Flores. The routes are timed to match the region’s distinct seasons, targeting the best conditions for encountering key species and navigating the park's northern and southern sites. Nusantara is an excellent choice for adventurous, budget-conscious divers who prioritize the quality of the underwater experience and a communal atmosphere. It is particularly well-suited for solo travelers, students, and groups who are happy with shared living arrangements and are focused on maximizing their time spent exploring Komodo's dynamic marine environment.
