About Humboldt Explorer
The Humboldt Explorer, a 34-meter liveaboard, navigates the Galápagos, offering accommodation for 16 guests across 8 cabins, refurbished in 2023.
The volcanic origins of the Galápagos are visible from the stark shorelines to the submerged geology below. This remote Pacific archipelago sits at a confluence of major oceanic forces where deep, cold currents collide with warmer equatorial waters. These upwellings sustain a unique food web, resulting in an extraordinary mix of cold-water and tropical species, from penguins and sea lions to marine iguanas. For divers, this means encounters with schools of scalloped hammerheads, whale sharks, and endemic Galápagos sharks. The 34-meter Humboldt Explorer is built to navigate these dynamic waters and provide a reliable platform for exploration.
All diving is conducted from two large pangas, which efficiently transport divers to the best entry points at each site. This method minimizes time in choppy surface water and allows for precise drops in strong currents. Back on the main vessel, the dive deck is organized for function. Each diver has a personal station with gear storage, and multiple rinse tanks are available for equipment. Photographers will appreciate the dedicated camera table, complete with charging outlets and compressed air for drying. Nitrox is available for certified divers, and every dive is led by experienced local naturalist guides, whose expertise is essential for navigating the challenging conditions.
Accommodating a maximum of 16 guests, the vessel maintains an intimate atmosphere. Eight staterooms are distributed between the main and lower decks, all featuring twin beds, private en-suite bathrooms, and individual climate controls. Between dives, guests can gather in the air-conditioned main saloon for meals, briefings, or reviewing the day’s footage. Outside, the upper deck provides a partially shaded area with lounge chairs, ideal for relaxing during surface intervals. A hot tub is also located on this deck, offering a warm welcome after dives in the cool upwellings of the western islands.
The culinary program is designed to provide hearty, flavorful meals that fuel a demanding dive schedule. An onboard chef prepares a mix of international and Ecuadorian-inspired cuisine using fresh ingredients. Meals are generally served buffet-style for breakfast and lunch, with a plated dinner. The menu is varied throughout the week to ensure a range of options. Special dietary requirements can be handled with advance notification. A selection of soft drinks, local beer, and wine is available to complement the evening meal.
The Humboldt Explorer is a 34-meter motor yacht with a 6.5-meter beam, a solid platform for open-ocean travel. Following a comprehensive refurbishment in 2023, its systems and guest areas are fully updated. The vessel is powered by reliable Detroit Diesel 6V92 engines, capable of a 10-knot top speed for the long crossings to the archipelago's outer islands. Designed for just 16 guests, the ship's infrastructure supports extended autonomy in this isolated region. The steel hull and overall design contribute to passenger comfort during the navigations between the central islands and the distant sites of Wolf and Darwin.
The vessel operates year-round, running a classic seven-night itinerary focused on the region's most famous dive locations. Trips typically begin and end at Baltra, concentrating on the northern islands of Wolf and Darwin, which are accessible only by liveaboard. These sites are world-renowned for their massive congregations of scalloped hammerheads and seasonal whale shark appearances. This itinerary is specifically designed for experienced divers. A high level of confidence is required to manage the strong currents, thermoclines, and deep, blue-water diving conditions that characterize the Galápagos. This is an expedition for those aiming to witness some of the ocean's most impressive wildlife spectacles.
