Emperor Leo

About Emperor Leo

The Maldivian atolls, shaped by millennia of coral growth and ocean currents, present a complex and biologically rich underwater environment.

The Maldivian island chain is the visible portion of a submerged mountain range, its 26 atolls forming a double line of coral-capped peaks across the Indian Ocean. This unique geography creates a network of channels, or *kandus*, which funnel nutrient-rich water with the changing monsoonal tides. This seasonal flow dictates the movement of marine life, drawing concentrations of plankton that, in turn, attract whale sharks and squadrons of manta rays to specific feeding grounds. Here, coral gardens flourish in sheltered lagoons while deep walls drop into the blue. The Emperor Leo is designed to navigate these varied water systems, giving divers access to the region's most productive sites. All diving activities are conducted from a large, dedicated dhoni that accompanies the main vessel. This traditional Maldivian boat serves as a mobile dive center, housing all compressors and equipment, which keeps the primary living areas quiet and dry. Divers set up their equipment once for the entire trip, leaving it securely stored on the dhoni between dives. Water entry and exit are made easy from this stable, purpose-built platform. Experienced local guides lead small groups, sharing their knowledge of currents, topography, and resident marine life. For underwater photographers, a designated area with rinse tanks is provided on the main vessel for camera equipment. Accommodation for 24 guests is spread across 12 cabins, each with a private en-suite bathroom and individual air conditioning. Options include four cabins with twin beds on the upper deck, one spacious suite with a double bed, and a combination of twin and double bed cabins on the lower deck. Social life centers on the vessel’s multiple relaxation zones. An air-conditioned indoor salon and dining area offers a cool retreat, while several outdoor decks provide space for socializing or quiet contemplation. The partially shaded sundeck is furnished with loungers, offering views of the passing atolls. The onboard chef prepares a varied menu that combines international dishes with influences from local Maldivian and Sri Lankan cuisine. Meals are typically served buffet-style in the main dining room, offering a wide selection to suit different tastes. Fresh fruits, salads, and vegetables accompany the main courses. Special dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice from guests. A bar is available on the main deck, serving a selection of soft drinks, beer, wine, and spirits. Complimentary tea, coffee, and water are available throughout the day. Constructed in 2009 and updated in 2012, the Emperor Leo is a 35.1-meter motor yacht with a traditional wooden hull. Its substantial 9.4-meter beam provides a stable and comfortable platform, an important attribute for open-water channel crossings. Powered by a 500 HP Mitsubishi engine, the vessel maintains a cruising speed of 10 knots, ensuring efficient passage between distant atolls. It accommodates a maximum of 24 guests. The boat is designed for self-sufficiency on week-long itineraries, with ample water and fuel storage. Note that there is no internet access available on board, allowing for a full disconnection from the outside world. Itineraries typically focus on the classic Central Atolls routes, departing from and returning to Malé. These trips follow the seasonal movements of large marine life, targeting North Malé, South Malé, Ari, and Vaavu atolls for their famous channel dives, manta cleaning stations, and potential whale shark encounters. The vessel is well-suited for certified divers comfortable with drift diving, a defining feature of the Maldivian experience. It appeals to travelers who prioritize an efficient, dive-focused operation and a social atmosphere. The dedicated dhoni system and experienced local guides make it an excellent choice for those seeking to maximize their time exploring the underwater world.
