About Ambai

Indonesia's marine realm, a confluence of major oceans, supports extensive coral formations and a high concentration of marine biodiversity.

The Indonesian nation is composed of more than seventeen thousand islands, a geographic fact that creates an almost infinite coastline and a complex web of marine passages. This immense archipelago acts as a natural filter between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, with nutrient-rich currents flowing through its channels and deep-sea trenches. The result is a collection of distinct marine bioregions, each supporting an extraordinary concentration of life, from vibrant coral gardens and schooling fish to rare macro critters and large pelagic animals. The 32-meter Ambai was specifically designed as a diver's platform to navigate these varied waters, offering access to the most biologically significant sites in the archipelago. The diving program is built around efficiency and small-group experiences. From the spacious dive deck, divers are transported to the sites aboard three fast and comfortable tenders, each powered by a 50HP engine. This three-skiff system minimizes wait times and allows for divers to be grouped according to experience level and interest, ensuring everyone gets the most out of their time underwater. A dedicated camera room with individual stations provides a well-lit, dry space for photographers to manage their equipment. For certified divers, nitrox is available to extend bottom time on the country’s world-class reefs. All dives are led by experienced local guides whose knowledge of the currents and marine life is fundamental to the operation. Life aboard the Ambai balances adventure with comfort. The vessel accommodates a maximum of 16 guests in eight air-conditioned cabins, all featuring private ensuite bathrooms. Cabins are configured with twin or double beds, including two upper deck cabins that offer expansive sea views. When not diving, guests can relax in the indoor salon and lounge area, a cool retreat perfect for socializing or reviewing the day’s photos. Outside, a large shaded deck provides a comfortable space to enjoy the tropical scenery and sea breezes, while the upper sundeck is ideal for sunbathing or stargazing in the clear night skies of these remote regions. The onboard culinary experience is designed to keep divers fueled and satisfied throughout their trip. The chef prepares a varied menu that combines authentic Indonesian dishes with familiar international cuisine, catering to a wide range of tastes. Meals are typically served buffet-style in the main salon, offering a generous selection of fresh and flavorful options. Snacks, fruit, coffee, and tea are readily available between dives to ensure energy levels remain high. The crew is also prepared to accommodate most special dietary needs, provided they are informed at the time of booking. Constructed from traditional ironwood and other tropical hardwoods in 2012, the Ambai is a modern and robust vessel. Its 32-meter length and 7.5-meter beam give it a stable presence in the water, a quality that is especially appreciated during open-water crossings. A powerful 600 Hp Mitsubishi marine engine provides reliable propulsion, maintaining a steady cruising speed of 8 knots across the vast distances that define Indonesian itineraries. With a capacity for just 16 guests, the vessel offers an intimate and uncrowded atmosphere, operating as a self-sufficient platform for exploring far-flung locations. Ambai operates a seasonal schedule, repositioning throughout the year to follow the optimal diving conditions across Indonesia. Itineraries include classic routes through the vibrant reefs of Raja Ampat, the pelagic-rich waters of Komodo National Park, and exploratory trips into the historic Banda Sea. Departures and arrivals are typically from major regional ports like Sorong, Labuan Bajo, or Ambon, depending on the chosen route. This liveaboard is an excellent choice for dedicated divers and underwater photographers who value a highly organized dive operation, comfortable accommodations, and the opportunity to experience a wide spectrum of Indonesia’s celebrated marine environments.
